High Level of Experience

Combs + Miguel Architecture Inc. was established in early 1992 as a small firm with a high level of experience and the ability to provide strong design capabilities, attentive and effective service to its clients. Both partners of the firm have a combined experience of over 50 years. We have served leading architectural/engineering firms in responsible positions of design and management and have developed effective skills in the methods and delivery of service. A partner is the primary contact with each client and serves as the project architect.

The partner is involved in the creation of the design and all decision making throughout the project.

Clients that we have served have been principally organizations of an institutional, government and corporate nature demanding the finest quality of service and personal attention. Present clients and design assignments are for governmental, institutional, religious and corporate clients continuing to expect outstanding performance from their architects.

The firm utilizes computers in the development of all phases of the design process. Conceptual design utilizes three-dimensional modeling to assist in the understanding of the design alternatives. Construction documents and specifications are more clearly presented and understood. Presented capabilities include latest releases of AutoCAD, 3D Modeling, Rendering and Architectural Desktop.

James R Combs | AIA

During the last 40 years of professional practice as an architect, Mr. Combs has had a wide range of experience in both building types and areas of design management.

Mr. Combs is the President of Combs+Miguel, Architecture, Inc. where he has been in charge of the management and design projects.  Several recent projects include:

He has been a design director for the 80 person Los Angeles Office of Leo A. Daly. Architecture, Engineering, Planning and Interiors.  His duties included the conceptual design and design management of projects through construction.  He was responsible for design quality, staff and consultant coordination, client relationship and development.  Significant project has been:

Mr. Combs, prior to coming with Leo A. Daly, was Principal Architect, General Manager, and director of Design in the Los Angeles and Kansas City offices of Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff (HNTB).  During his 15 years with the firm he was responsible for the design of many hotel projects, both domestic and internationally.  His works has received awards from the American Institute of Architects and various civic and trade organizations.

He is presently a member of the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, receiving a Presidential Citation and Certificates of Appreciation from Los Angeles Chapter as Chairman of the Library Committee. He is a member of the California Council of the American Institute of Architects, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.  He is a Registered Architect in the States of California, Hawaii and Missouri.  He was educated at the University of Kansas where he received his Bachelors Degree in 1958 and Masters Courses from 1974 through 1977.

Miguel Miguel | AIA

Mr. Miguel’s diverse experience brings a strong architectural background to his work, which includes production coordination, construction administration, lender’s review and design for a variety of projects.  His responsibilities include quality assurance for the firm, directing the architectural production staff, managing and directing consultants and formulating schedules.

He is the Vice President of Combs+Miguel, Architecture, Inc. where he provides architectural services on Tenant Improvements for Offices Hotel, Auditorium, and Retail, building projects.  Among the projects completed under his direction include:

He has been a Senior Architect for 5 years with WWCOT in Los Angeles where he was the project Architect on several Educational Projects including the East Valley High School No 3 and South Gate Elementary School for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Mr. Miguel has been the Project Architect for the Cottage Hospital New Central Plant in Santa Barbara, CA while with Lee, Burkhart and Liu Architects.

Prior to working at WWCOT Mr. Miguel was a Senior Architect for HNTB, Los Angeles where he concentrated on providing services in police and governmental facilities, being Project Architect for California State Prison, Riverside County II in Blythe, CA.  Here he coordinated the requirements of the California Department of corrections, as well as the work of several consultants.

He is presently a member of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and the California Council of the American Institute of Architects, and holds a Certificate of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.  He is a Registered Architect in the States of California and Ohio.  He earned a Bachelors Degree in Architecture in 1976 from the University of Cincinnati.
